Union Canal - Edinburgh to Falkirk

Union Canal - right on the doorstep

Within about one mile of Parkley Farm you can pick up the Union Canal. It is a 31.5 mile (50.7 km) canal which stretches from Lochrin Basin, Edinburgh to Falkirk at the Falkirk Wheel, where it joins the Forth and Clyde Canal.

Along the canal from Edinburgh to Glasgow

Originally built to transport coal, it was designed by Hugh Baird, who oversaw the engineering work while it was being built between 1818 and 1822. It is said that Burke and Hare, the notorious body snatchers were employed as labourers during the construction.

However, competition from the railways caused it to close for commercial use in the 1930's. Many of the locks, connecting it to the Forth and Clyde Canal at Falkirk, were filled in and built on in the following years.

In 2000, The Millennium Link, a project to restore both the Union and Forth and Clyde Canals, saw the two canals joined once again at the Falkirk end of the Union Canal with the building of The Falkirk Wheel, an unique rotating boat lift.
